Starting a travel blog can be one of the most fulfilling ventures you embark on. We started our blog for like minded people who maybe early retired like us and want to enrich their lives by seeing as much of the planet as they can whilst we are priviledged to be here.

Popular blogging platforms like WordPress, Squarespace, and Wix offer user-friendly interfaces. We did research the different platforms and actually chose Wix.


Tips:

  • Self-Hosted vs. Hosted: We opted for a hosted blog as we were beginners and needed some guidance. Although you can establish a free hosted site you will fine there are limitations and soon need to purchase add ons. With a self-hosted site you have total flexibility to set up your site exactly as you want it. there is a good article by productiveblogging.com which goes through the pros and cons very well.

  • Domain Name: Choose a catchy, memorable name that relates to your niche and is easy to spell. Also consider if your name covers exactly what you want. less than 12 months in we decided to amend our name as we felt our first choice was great but may narrow our audience. (We changed from 2ontour4x4 to 2ontourexplore as we didnt only travel in our 4x4)


2. Select a Hosting Provider


Your website needs a reliable hosting service. Providers like Wix, Bluehost or SiteGround offer affordable plans and excellent customer support.


Recommendations:

  • Performance: Look for hosting that guarantees uptime and fast loading times.

  • Customer Service: Choose a provider with 24/7 customer support.


3. Design Your Blog


A clean, attractive layout enhances user experience and keeps readers engaged. Use themes that are responsive and mobile-friendly since many readers browse on their phones.

Plugins assist with SEO, social sharing, and performance. Key plugins like Yoast SEO help optimize your blog for search engines, while social sharing plugins encourage readers to share your content across platforms.
